Save the date: Our Annual Walk to Scool Day is Friday, Oct. 7!
GCSS will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Friday, Oct. 7. This is the seventh year the school system has participated in this event.
Walk to School Day was established in the United States in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America. Canada and Great Britain already had walk to school programs in place. In 2000, these three countries joined together to create International Walk to School Day.
Walk to School Day began as a simple idea - children and parents, school and local officials walking to school together on a designated day. It is an energizing event, reminding everyone of the simple joy of walking to school, the need for safe places to walk and bike and the health benefits of regular daily activity. Staying active is one of the most important things a person can do, that is why GCSS is partnering with the American Heart Association for Walk to School Day and other heart-healthy activities like Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart.
On the morning of Oct. 7, students, staff and parents will meet at designated locations and walk together as a group to school.
Union Point STEAM Academy students and staff will walk along Dolvin Avenue to their school
Greensboro Elementary School, Anita White Carson Middle School, Greene County High School, Greene County CBJ Preschool and PREP Center students will walk along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to their respective schools in Greensboro.
Both walks will begin by 7:45 a.m
New this year, the school system is sponsoring a poster contest for students in grades K-12. First place winners from each school - Greensboro Elementary, Union Point STEAM Academy, Carson Middle and Greene County High - will receive a Wal-Mart gift card. The Herald Journal and the Lake Oconee News are donating the gift cards, and JayRay Trucking is donating a gift basket, which will be given to the overall district winner.
